Woo hoo! I did it. I ran the Market Square Day 10K road race. I has been 5 years since I trained for and ran a race. As a matter of fact I had a 4 year hiatus from any running at all. It certainly wasn’t as easy to train as it once was. There were points at which I really wasn’t sure if I could do it … but I did. My time was better than I had expected (given the lapse in running).
The course is great, it starts in Market Square (as its name implies) and all around the residential parts of the city. As a matter of fact, my house is at the 2 mile mark. It was great to have friends and neighbors cheer me on. The race continued through Portsmouth and ended up at Prescott Park.
A few things have changed since I last raced, for one thing the bib number has an embedded chip that records your start and finish, no more chip that ties onto your shoes! I ran it in 54:28, that was an 8:46 min/mile pace, yippee. There were 1,740 finishers and I finished 715th, I was 16th out of 100 in my age group — not bad at all.
