Yesterday my running buddy and I ran the 1/2 marathon course. We wanted to get in the 13.1 miles, and we wanted to “feel” the wind and hills as we will on race day. Having already run 10 miles a few times, we figured that the jump to 13 would feel OK. Well, we did it, but it was tough! Around mile 11 I totally stopped talking (if you know me, you know this is quite an unusually occurrence), by mile 12 my only communication was via grunts.
Now this is a beautiful course, quite flat until mile 8 where we were greeted with a nice, long hill; then flat again, from mile 10 1/2-11 1/2 we run over the three small bridges from Newcastle to Portsmouth. The wind was strong as we went over the Piscataqua river! At mile 12, feeling we were on the home stretch, we started to LONG, consistent hill, culminating in a right turn toward the finish and a sharp “pop up” hill at mile 13! The last .1 is all downhill. Literally, we had to run down a fairly steep hill to the finish!
It wasn’t easy but we did it! Now to recover, then taper down to our race on Nov 13.
